It’s funny the things that make you home sick, even just a little. I haven’t set foot in an Irish Bar since I got here, I’ve even gave up drinking alcohol, for the most part. A last minute decision to head out for lunch the other week meant we ended up grabbing some food from Micky’s Public House. While it’s not classed as an Irish Pub but rather an “Irish Inspired Concept” it still had that feel of walking in to a pub back home. Groups of men sitting around drinking pints, friendly staff behind the bar and that sort of darkness that’s not exactly dark but homely.
As we stood at the bar waiting for our food I spotted some beer mats. The Guinness one caught my eye at first. Of course me being me I had to go snooping through them for the most Irish ones that I could find, which may not have been a lot but it made me smile and think happy thoughts of home. Then I started to giggle to myself. Random memories started popping in to my head. When I was younger my granddad, my uncles and even my dad would play jokes and games with the beer mats. Ripping pieces out of them to stick them on their nose and make funny faces. It made me laugh every single time.
Right now I wish I had a picture of this. A physical picture that I could insert and let everyone else giggle at how amused I am by it, but I only have my memories. Something to treasure forever.
